SS 17-4PH is a highly versatile precipitation hardening austenitic stainless steel that is heat treated in the same manner as other grades of the austenitic family. This grade has one of the highest strength and moderate corrosion resistance properties among all stainless steel grades. There is so much demand for 17-4PH stainless steel due to its use in industries such as the oil and gas, chemical, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals and food sectors, and aerospace industries where both strength and corrosion resistance are critical.
Stainless Steel 17-4PH scrap can be defined as unused, or wasted material that may have been produced as a byproduct of the production of the 17-4PH stainless steel or equipment and structures that were made from this grade of steel but are now obsolete. Such scrap can be recycled and reused to create a variety of new steel products, which can significantly cut down the consumption of energy and raw materials needed to manufacture steel from scratch.
It is processed by sorting, washing and shredding in order to remove impurities from the 17-4PH SS scraps and melted for recycling and casting in reusable products such as ingots, billets or slabs. The recycled 17-4PH steel still maintains two of the most important aspects of its characteristics: high strength and resistance to corrosion, so it can be reused in important operations, instead of going to the scrap.
